Hello readers
R U OK? Day is deeply personal and profoundly powerful. It began with one man’s mission to honor his father and change lives across Australia. The first R U OK? Day was held on 29 November 2009, but it was later moved to the second Thursday of September, where it continues to be observed each year.
With R U OK? Day coming up, I wanted to offer a few suggestions on how to get involved. But it’s important to remember that R U OK? is a question we can ask any day of the year. One of the simplest and most meaningful ways to participate is by starting a conversation with a friend, family member, or colleague. If you find it difficult to have those deeper conversations, the R U OK? website provides a helpful guide to support you just fill in your details to access it.
You can also bring people together by hosting events such as walking groups, barbecues, or morning teas. Wearing yellow is a great way to raise awareness, and you can get posters from the R U OK? website to decorate your workspace. If you're feeling inspired, consider starting a fundraiser or volunteering to support the cause.
Most importantly, take the time to check in with those around you. Whether it’s a short chat or a long conversation, asking someone if they’re okay can mean a lot. If you notice someone might not be feeling their best, invite them for a walk, do an activity together, or simply sit down and talk. Your presence and care can make a real difference.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you find a way to connect with someone this R U OK? Day and every day.
