Hello readers,

I’m working from home today instead of my usual locations in Wantirna and Knox, and I wanted to take a moment to share something important.

October is Motorcyclist Awareness Month, a time dedicated to reminding all road users to look out for one another and to help keep everyone safe on our roads. The campaign is led by the Motorcycle Community Engagement Panel, with strong support from the TAC, Victoria Police, and the Department of Transport and Planning.

This statewide initiative brings together a wide range of people and organizations, including law enforcement, transport authorities, and motorcycle community groups, all working toward a common goal, sharing the road safely. The message is simple but powerful share the road and keep everyone safe.

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, which means it’s vital for riders to take extra care every time they get on their bikes. Wearing protective gear such as a helmet, gloves, boots, and proper riding clothing can make a significant difference in the event of an accident.

It’s also important for riders to stay visible by using headlights and wearing bright or reflective clothing. Maintaining an alert and defensive riding style can help avoid hazards, as it’s safest to always assume that other road users may not see you. Understanding your motorcycle, your skill level, and the current road conditions is also key to staying safe.

Of course, motorcycle safety is not just the responsibility of riders. Drivers also play an essential role in keeping our roads safe. Taking a moment to double check before turning, merging, or changing lanes can prevent serious accidents, as motorcycles can be easy to miss in mirrors or blind spots.

Keeping a safe distance behind motorcycles is equally important, as they can stop more quickly than cars. Drivers should also avoid distractions such as mobile phones and always stay focused on the road. Above all, it’s important to respect a rider’s space and remember that motorcycles are entitled to a full lane, just like any other vehicle.

There are many ways that people can get involved in promoting motorcycle awareness. You can host a community event, share positive stories and messages about motorcycle safety on social media, or simply start conversations with friends and family about the importance of being mindful of riders. Every small action helps raise awareness and makes our roads safer for everyone.

If you’re in the area, there will be a Motorcyclist Awareness Month BBQ at the AMX Superstore in Bendigo, Victoria, on Saturday, 25 October. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet other riders, connect with community members, and show your support for safer roads.

As the weather warms up and more motorcyclists take to the roads, let’s all do our part to make sure everyone gets home safely. Whether you’re behind the wheel or on two wheels, a moment of awareness can make a world of difference.

Ride and drive safely and thank you for reading my blog!
