Hello readers,
Today I’m writing from home instead of my usual location in Nunawading, and I thought it would be the perfect time to talk about something special: Labour Day!
Labour Day in Australia is more than just a day off work it’s a celebration of history, fairness, and the everyday people who helped shape the work life balance we enjoy today. This public holiday honours the achievements of the 19th‑century labour movement, a time when workers joined together to demand a fairer way of living. Their powerful message became:
8 hours work, 8 hours recreation, and 8 hours rest.
This simple idea changed working conditions forever and helped create a future where workers are respected, protected, and valued.
On Labour Day, people across the country take the opportunity to relax and enjoy a well-deserved long weekend. Some spend time with family and friends, others go on road trips, have picnics, explore markets, or fire up the barbecue. Many people simply enjoy the break from their busy routines. No matter how you choose to celebrate, Labour Day is a great reminder of how important balance is in our everyday lives.
It’s inspiring to think about how far we’ve come. The rights we often take for granted today fair hours, safer workplaces, and better conditions were all won because people stood up for fairness more than a century ago.
As I sit here writing from home, I’m thankful for the chance to slow down, appreciate the day, and reflect on everyone who helped shape the work life we have now.
Happy Labour Day, and enjoy your long weekend!
