Hello readers,

I'm writing from home today, not from the Wantirna Knox area where I usually work, and I’d like to share a few thoughts about Dementia Action Week. This important initiative was started by Dementia Australia and is all about reconnecting with family members or career's of people living with dementia. It also aims to help communities build greater understanding and practical skills so that those with dementia can continue to live happily and confidently among us.

When visiting someone with dementia, it’s helpful to plan your visit at a time of day that suits them best when they’re likely to feel most comfortable and alert. Regular visits can make a big difference, and bringing a grandchild along can be especially heartwarming. You might also consider bringing photos, albums, or simple crafts to do together. Activities like planting seedlings or listening to calming music can spark joy and create meaningful moments. Even bringing a pet along can offer emotional comfort and brighten someone’s day. It’s also a good idea to let the person know in advance when you’re coming, as it helps them feel prepared and reassured.

Thanks for reading, and I hope this inspires you to connect with someone in your life during Dementia Action Week.
