Thanks for stopping by!
Today’s blog is coming to you from the comfort of my home instead of my usual spot in Nunawading, and I’m excited to be covering a really important topic: Tips for Making the Most of Short-Term Accommodation (STA) and more you need to know.
Short-Term Accommodation (STA), which includes respite, is a funded support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. It allows participants to stay somewhere different for a short period of time while continuing to receive the care and support they need.
STA can look different for everyone. It might involve a few days away in a supportive environment, an overnight or weekend stay, or even emergency or planned respite depending on individual needs.
During an STA stay, participants are typically supported with accommodation, personal care, food and daily living assistance, as well as engaging activities designed to make the experience enjoyable and meaningful.
To truly make the most of STA, a little planning goes a long way. Booking stays in advance where possible, clearly communicating needs and preferences, and starting with shorter stays especially for those new to respite can make a big difference. Taking the time to reflect on each experience and provide feedback also helps ensure future stays are even better.
A great STA experience should feel safe, comfortable, and supportive. With 24/7 care from trained staff, structured daily routines, social and recreational activities, and opportunities to build life skills, STA can be both a positive and empowering experience.
Thanks for reading my blog.
