Tips on keeping cool this summer

Hello readers,

I’m writing from aboard, not my usual spot in Wantirna in the Knox area. Lately, it’s been scorching hot, so I wanted to share some tips to survive these long, hot days across Victoria and all over Australia.

According to ABC, temperature records are being broken, with some places getting close to 50°C! Even normally cooler areas have been feeling the heat.

Keep the sun out:

One simple trick is keeping sunlight out of your home. An extra blind or even a blanket before sunrise can help. Outdoor blinds make a big difference too. You can also use UV blocking material on your windows; it works even if you don’t have blinds, just attach it with hooks.

Protect your plants:

This UV material works well for plants too. We draped ours over our tomato plants on really hot days, and it helped them stay safe in the heat.

Stay hydrated:

Ice trays are your friend! Fill your water bottle with ice blocks. Insulated bottles keep water cold all day. I took mine to work, and it still had ice blocks when I got home. You can grab one from Kmart or similar shops; mine was on special for $4.

Air out your home:

Open doors and windows early in the morning or later in the afternoon when it’s cooler to get some fresh air flowing.

Stay cool out there, and thanks for reading!
