Hello readers,

I’m writing from home today instead of my usual spot in Nunawading, and as it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to talk about how to support a loved one with mental health challenges. If you care for someone experiencing mental health challenges, this is for you.

First, it’s important to look after yourself too when you feel supported and not burnt out, you can give your best care to others.

Some signs that someone may not be okay include becoming more withdrawn or quiet, changes in mood such as irritability, sadness or anxiety, losing interest in things they normally enjoy, changes in sleep or eating habits, low energy or constant tiredness, avoiding social situations, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, or expressing feelings of hopelessness or overwhelm.

You can help by checking in in a kind and non-judgemental way, listening without trying to fix everything, and letting them know you are there for support. Encourage them to speak with a trusted professional, support worker, friend, or family member if they feel comfortable, help them stay connected to daily routines and social contact, and remind them they are not alone.

Thanks for reading my blog.
